Traditionally, Korean music was one of two styles, either based on folk music or a genre of music that is popularly known as court music. Court music refers to the music that originated under the regime of Joseon dynasty and was influenced by the court music of China and Japan. Of course, the music in Korea today has come a long way from the music of ancient Korea. This change of tastes in music is also reflected in the Korean songs which are popular in South Korea. In North Korea, the music scene was largely eliminated after the Japanese invasion. Today, music is controlled by the government and is mainly released in the form of propaganda, influenced by Russian and Chinese music. In fact, the laws are so strict that listening to music from South Korea or rock music can be considered a crime.
