The first use! ♬
According to the records, wires were first made for musical instruments in 1351 in Augsburg.
Piano wire, which is also known as music wire is specially made for pianos from tempered high-carbon steel, also known as spring steel, replacing the earlier material iron, that was used to make piano strings before 1834.
Piano wire is known to have a very high tensile strength, and also comes in use for many other purposes, like springs, surgical uses, fishing lures, for special effects in movie industries, and for cutting cheese and soap. They are sold by weight, and are packed as tight coils. They recoil to their original shape once stretched, but can be straightened out using rollers. Proper care must be taken, as these wires can be damaged by perspiration. They are expected to last for decades; so before winding them to your piano, these are all the possible sizes available that you should check before buying.
