The music industry has had its share of newbies, along with talented singers and musicians as well. When expectations were raised, few hardly ever lived up to it. Here’s a look at some ‘one hit wonders’ that caused a sensation, but did not really manage to repeat their success story.
They came, they saw , they conquered, and they left us asking for more. Well, unfortunately, these one hit wonders did not quite live up to the reputation amongst their large fan following. I am talking about those groups or singers that rocked the music industry with their chart topper track. Although, some of these groups did return to the music scene with some foot tapping numbers, such tracks may have gained little mileage on the charts, as they failed to create an impression or cause a phenomenon as compared to their previous hits. Let us take a peek into the past, and relive those moments when we waited with bated breath for the repeat telecasts on MTV, in the hope of viewing these videos.
Joey Lawrence
Whoa baby! This groovy guy with the chocolate looks said that there was Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix, and he left girls asking for more. This snazzy video with some cool graffiti and uber cool clothing, along with some moves on roller skates was Joey’s biggest hit single, and hit the number 19 slot on the Billboard Hot 100. Causing a rage with his first single, Joey followed this track with Stay Forever and I Can’t Help Myself, which did not really make waves. We can’t help ourselves either Joey, for your first track scored much higher! Joey quit the music industry to pursue a career in acting.
Jeremy Jordan
A sure teenage heartthrob, Jeremy scorched the screens with The Right Kind of Love from his album Try My Love. This light-eyed boy with the super hot looks, reached the 14th slot on the Billboard charts for this hit single. Although he followed it up with Wannagirl, it did not have a spellbinding effect like the previous hit. Wannagirl followed with Try My Love and more tracks, before Jeremy finally moved on to pursue a career in acting.
Blind Melon
The Bee Girl tapped away to glory and caused onlookers to laugh, which caused her to run off the stage; her eyes brimming with tears. Well, I have certainly not gone batty; I am talking about the video that went on to become a huge hit. No Rain brought accolades for the group Blind Melon, who finally got a breakthrough with this hit number. Hitting the top slots in the Billboard charts, and also featured as one the best videos on VH1, the beautiful combination of great music and a creative approach to the video, finally did the trick for Blind Melon. This group had its share of ups and downs, and unfortunately could not recreate the magic of No Rain.
Vanilla Ice
So cool was his personality that this rapper climbed the charts with amazing speed with his smash hit single Ice Ice Baby. Vanilla Ice met with more problems and adversities along the way, and all his later albums failed to rekindle the interest of the public.
Boy Krazy
That’s What Love Can Do, was probably the only track that propelled Boy Krazy towards fame. Although the other singles from their album Boy Krazy also turned out to be foot-tapping numbers, none gave the group the mileage it required to taste success in the music industry.
Haddaway
He crooned What is Love, and raced to the top spot with great ease. What is Love was Haddaway’s major hit, and gave him the initial break he required. He unfortunately could not really cash in on the success, although his second single Life created quite a few ripples.
Los Del Rio
Almost anybody and everybody must have grooved to the Macarena. Whether it was the music video or the song itself; or perhaps the combination of both, that gave Los Del Rio tremendous success. This one hit wonder had the longest running number one debut single in the music industry of America. Macarena enjoyed plenty of air play and popularity on music channels, and was also ranked as the greatest one hit wonder!
